Rome Italy - March 31 - April 8 2007 / St. Peter's Bascila - The most famous church in Chistendom. The spiritual capital of the Roman Catholic Faith and the focus of Vatican City, the independent Papal State. It is also a testament to the genius of Michelangelo, architect and sculptor. It can accomodate 60,000 people with 778 columns, 44 altars, 135 mosaics and 395 statues. The most famous of all the statues in San Pietro, is Michelangelo's La Pieta whicih was begun in 1498 when he was 24 years old. It is his only signed work. He engraved his name on the band across the Virgin's brest, and an M inside her right hand. The vast dome looking up is covered in his mosaics. Judith L. Trest |
